Am I happy? What does it mean to be happy? What is happiness anyway? How do you define happiness? Several months ago, these questions went through my head. For weeks I thought about: why it is so difficult for us to be just happy? Happy for the moment. Just to be happy and relaxed.
I’ve learned that you need to let yourself be happy! You have to accept that you deserve to be happy! That you may be happy and can be happy. That you can make others happy if you yourself is happy.
Many people think that happiness is linked to fate. But happiness needs the same care as a relationship or friendship. Because the only person who is responsible for your happiness is yourself. No one else can do the job for you. And you can not make your own happiness depended on a person.
To me this is one of the most important things I’ve learned in the last period of life. Today I want to share with you 10 tips that have helped me to live happier.
1. Write a ‘Happy List’
Take a piece of paper and write down all the things that make you happy. I am not talking about material things, like a sports car, a dream villa or a new pair of shoes, but about experiences and people. Simple things that make everyday life easier, which feed your soul and make you happy. A few of the things that make me happy are: walks with my dog, picking flowers in the field with my mother, cooking recipes that I have wanted to try forever, read a book, have a glass of wine with my best friend, calls with my sister, start the morning with a fresh smoothie, cuddle with my dog, etc … These are all things that can and should be integrated into everyday life.
There’s hardly anything better than sport to free your head and let your body relax. Do what you love, what makes you feel good. Jogging for example makes me happy. It frees my head and after a shower I feel amazing . Many swear on yoga, what I really want to try soon. If you like biking, go for it. If you like to stroll with your dog through the fields, do that. It does not matter when and how and where. The most important is that you’re on the move and bring your circulation going. Sport releases happy hormones!
3. Eat consciously
In the past years I have experienced the tremendous impact of my nutrition on my state of mind. Since I have changed my diet (e.g. no refined white sugar) I feel like a different person, physically and mentally.
I start my days with vitamin-packed breakfast. It makes me feel good, healthy and happy. I then have a free head for the day! I believe that our body determines our mental state extremely! Find some healthy, light and delicious recipes here.
4. Surround yourself with happy people
Avoid people who are not happy, who are negative and have no positive impact on you. Because like the flu, even negative thinking is contagious. Surround yourself with people who appreciate you, who have a positive attitude, who motivate and respect you. With people who can be happy and want to be happy. I made a decision like this a couple of weeks ago, and I really feel liberated.
5. No self-pity anymore
If something goes wrong, go find a solution and do not wallow in self-pity. I am someone who has to work on this. Sometimes I feel like crawl into bed, under my cover, and just wait there til everything’s alright again. But, unfortunately, this does not work. Patience has to be learned and be trained. Be patient with yourself, try to find a solution, ask someone for advice or help. And most importantly: try to laugh about it!
6. Bring a routine in your life
Since I have a morning-routine, my days changed completely. I try wake-up earlier in order to prepare me a delicious breakfast. I make my favorite tea, cut fruits and make myself chia-pudding, oatmeal or yogurt with fruit. I enjoy this half hour to the fullest. It makes me feel good, fresh and energetic. So you can always be sure, no matter what unpleasant tasks lie ahead this day, the morning will be great. In the next few weeks, I will also try to get a sleep-routine.
7. Think positive
This is easier said than done. Positive thinking is something that you have to learn and practice. It takes time, but it’s doable. Every time you catch yourself thinking negatively, remember to think positively.
8. Do not question everything
„If that goes wrong then …“ „But it could happen that ..“ „But what if …“, „I’m afraid that …“. Try to delete those thoughts. I recently read a very nice wisdom „Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will“. Just do it! Do not think about what others might think, not trying to analyze each situation to death. Listen to your intuition, your heart and your mind. Live in the here and now and stay objective.
9. Do not forget to smile
Smile often. That not only lets out endorphins, but also makes others happy.
10. Hakuna Matata!
Learn to let go. Move on! I know well that this is easier said than done, but you should focus on the future and not on things you can’t change anymore. Don’t hold on of hurting feelings, don’t tie yourself on your past, stop suffering. You have the choice to be happy! Try to forgive people and walk away from situation that bring you down again. And if nothing of this works, start to sing „Hakuna Matata“!
